PGD’s Passport to Fun in Southwest Florida!

Checking In with the ‘Happy Capys’ of SWFL

If you just touched down at Punta Gorda Airport, your Florida checklist probably involves soaking up the sun, exploring the beaches, and relaxing under the palm trees. But what if we told you that just a short drive from PGD you could cross off your bucket list, “hang out with the world’s largest, chillest rodents!”

Welcome to the PGD Passport series, where we collect stamps at the absolute best, most unique stops across Southwest Florida. Today, we’re boarding a flight straight to maximum cuteness at the Suncoast Humane Society in Englewood to meet their local celebrities: the Happy Capys.

Meet the Trio: SWFL’s Chillest Residents

Suncoast Humane Society has been a staple of Charlotte County for over 50 years, saving and rehoming thousands of pets annually. But they also welcome very special residents who have completely stolen the local spotlight, including three capybaras named Jane, Betty and Tippi.

Capybaras are native to South America and are famous for their incredibly social, gentle nature. At Suncoast Humane Society, these girls act as animal ambassadors, helping the shelter teach visitors about wildlife conservation and the powerful bond between humans and animals.

What It’s Really Like: Our Firsthand Experience

This isn’t your typical “look through a fence” zoo exhibit. Suncoast’s Humane Educational Experiences get you right into their world.

Our journey started indoors, where we got to feed Jane, Betty and Tippi their absolute favorite crunchy snack – fresh lettuce. Capybaras are incredibly docile, and it didn’t take long before we were playing and snuggling with them on the ground. Their fur is surprisingly coarse, and getting to sit right next to them while they munch away is pure bliss.

After some indoor bonding time, the adventure moved outside to their play yard. We watched the girls happily splash around in their little kiddie pools to cool off, before hand-feeding them fresh grass.

Why It’s a Must-Visit Stamp on Your PGD Passport

  • Up-Close Encounters: You’ll learn all about capybara behavior, their native habitats, and what makes them the internet’s most peaceful animals from their passionate handlers.
  • Purpose-Driven Fun: Every single dollar from these unique experiences goes directly back into Suncoast Humane Society’s main mission: operating as a non-profit shelter dedicated to saving local cats and dogs.
  • Perfect Day Trip: Located in Englewood, a trip to see the capybaras pairs perfectly with a beach afternoon at Manasota Key or a stroll down historic Dearborn Street.
