Celebrating Veterans! Things to Do in a Purple Heart County

Veterans Day Parade 

Join the Charlotte County Airport Authority Commissioners at the Annual Veterans Day Parade in Port Charlotte on Nov. 11 at 9 a.m.  The parade will start at Port Charlotte Beach Park, travel along Harbor Boulevard to Edgewater Drive and on to the William R. Gaines Jr. Veterans Memorial Park.

Fly into PGD and experience the patriotic tributes this Purple Heart County has to offer! Being a Purple Heart County serves as a testament to our unwavering support for our wounded warriors and their families. A few must-sees include:

Vietnam Memorial Wall of Southwest Florida

  • Located in Laishley Park
  • Granite used is from the same source as the original monument
  • Visitors can do name rubbings, as is allowed at the original monument

Military Heritage Museum

  • Located in Punta Gorda adjacent to Fishermen’s Village
  • Tells the story of U.S. military heritage dating from the pre-Revolutionary War
  • Thousands of artifacts, graphics, videos, realistic dioramas, virtual reality, library with genealogy access and more
  • Gulf Theater features live musical entertainment, lectures/meetings, and stage plays

Public Art

William R. Gaines Jr. Veterans Memorial Park

  • Located on Edgewater Drive in Port Charlotte
  • Features a new military-themed playground, tennis/pickleball courts, surrounded by kayak trails
  • Monuments to honor Military Services Memorial and First Responders Memorial
  • Plans to build a Peacekeepers Memorial Tower to commemorate those Americans lost in Beirut in 1983

Centennial Park

  • Located in Murdock Village
  • Walkway that features a brick plaza with the US Flag, Florida Flag, and POW/MIA flag
  • Walkway allows quiet retrospection and leads to a granite monument honoring all Veterans
