Look! There’s a new bachelor’s degree in the sky! Hodges University has launched a bachelor’s degree concentration in aviation. Formally named the Bachelor in Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Aviation, it opens a pathway for students interested in becoming a commercial pilot. Community Update from Punta Gorda Airport CEO, James W. Parish, P.E. The Charlotte County Airport Authority (CCAA) Board voted three to two on Nov. 19, 2020 to deny entertaining proposals associated with the Airport Investment Partnership Program (AIPP). However, discussions about the future of the CCAA as a special district continued in the larger political community.  In the following weeks, proponents of the AIPP continued to socialize possibilities of another entity taking over the airport (involuntary dissolution) so that proceeds from the AIPP could still be realized and utilized by others. The FAA has announced it has prepared a Final Environmental Assessment (EA) to consider the potential environmental impacts of the South-Central Florida Metroplex (FL Metroplex) Project. Based on the information and analysis contained in the Final EA, the FAA has also issued a Finding of No Significant Impact/Record of Decision (FONSI/ROD) for the project. Special thanks to the entire team that made PGD’s Triennial Drill a success! This full-scale exercise, required by the FAA every three years, tests the speed and effectiveness of emergency personnel and airport staff in the event of a significant incident. In addition to Charlotte County Fire & EMS, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office dispatch team participated, along with the Air Traffic Control Tower and Worldwide Flight Services. Officials Celebrate with Ribbon Cutting Punta Gorda, FL (Oct. 12, 2020) – The Charlotte County Airport Authority (Airport Authority) signified the reopening of Runway 15-33 with a ribbon cutting today. Airport Authority Commissioners were joined by airport management, congressional staff, lead engineering consultants and contractors. In addition to a 593-foot extension that increased the runway length to 6,281 feet, the rehabilitation included resurfacing, grooving, painting and adding LED sustainable lighting. Airport Stakeholders and emergency responders will take part in a full-scale training exercise at Punta Gorda Airport on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020. Passengers will not be affected by this exercise as all the commercial airline facilities, including entrance and exit roads, parking, the Bailey Terminal and aircraft boarding will still be accessible and operational. The exercise will simulate an emergency response to a mock aircraft accident at the south end of the airport.
