The airport occupies 1934 acres of land east of I-75, south of US 17 and approximately two miles south of the Peace River. It's the highest elevation in the county at approximately 25 feet above sea level.
At the beginning World War II, the US Army Corps of Engineers built a training base on the property. The airport was named the Punta Gorda Army Airfield. Following the war, the US Government issued a Deed of Release transferring all of the fixtures and improvements situated on the property to the county.
Primary ground access to the airport is via Airport Road from the west, Piper Road from the south, Golf Course Boulevard from the north. However, Airport Road does not connect to Interstate Highway 75. Access from I-75 is via State Road 17 to Golf Course Boulevard and Jones Loop Road to Piper Road.
